When it comes to growing fruit trees, I haven’t the slightest idea where to start.
There are so many rules when it comes to planting one of these suckers. You can’t just plop it in the ground wherever you feel like it. You have to worry about sun and shade, distance between trees and if you are one of those nice neighbors, you will also consider the relation between your neighbors fence and how wide it grows. Not everyone wants lemons falling in their yard. I mean, if it was me I would just pick ‘em up and make some lemonade, but we aren’t all the same now are we?
If you are interested in growing more than one fruit, consider planting a tree that grows more than one fruit. Yes, you read that right… it actually exists. I have heard them called a couple different things – a Fruit Salad tree or a Multi- Graft tree. You can even have your tree “custom made”, just specify which fruits you want on it. I think there are rules to it, like choosing all citrus or all apples. Because different varieties grow are different times, you will have fruit most to all of the year from just ONE TREE.
Technology is pretty awesome.
Before buying, also be sure you consider the option of full-size or dwarf varieties depending on the space you have available and the amount of fruit you are looking to have.
For more details, here is information for a couple different companies that sell these types of trees in the United States. If you happen to be following my blog from Australia/NSW, check out image source FruitSaladTrees.com! If you sell these trees or know of a great place that does, let me know and I will add them to the list.
